Eset Kokiuly

1667 – 1749

A Kazakh hero, political and military leader who fought against colonialism and external enemies.

Eset Kökıuly (1667–1749) was a famous national hero, batyr (warrior), and political leader in the history of Kazakhstan. He came from the Tama clan of the Junior Zhuz and was one of the most prominent commanders in the fight against the Dzungars and other external enemies in the 18th century.

Eset Batyr fought bravely for the freedom of his people and the protection of their land and homeland. He participated in major battles alongside Abulkhair Khan against the Dzungars and the Kalmyks of the Volga region. Especially after the tragic "Aqtoban shubrindy" (mass migration) events of 1723–1727, he played a crucial role in uniting the people.

In 1748, he was granted the title of “Tarhan” by the Russian Empire — an honorable and autonomous rank given to military leaders. He is recognized not only as a warrior but also as a political and diplomatic figure who defended the interests of his people.

Eset Batyr passed away in 1749. His grave is located in the village of Bestamak in Aktobe region. Today, he is revered as a national hero in Kazakhstan: many schools, streets, and monuments bear his name.
