Etymology

There is no precise information about the origin of the name Uzbek. The origin of the name is a subject of debate among many historians. According to the first theory, the name Uzbek comes from the name of the legendary ancestor of the Turkic peoples, Oghuz Beg/Khan/Qaghan, and later evolved into the name Uzbek. Another theory suggests that the name derives from the name of Uzbek Khan (1282–1341), ruler of the Golden Horde. However, this theory is strongly rejected by many historians. The main reason is that people bearing the name Uzbek lived long before Uzbek Khan. For example, Uzbek Muzaffar (1210–1225) of the Eldiguzid dynasty lived many years before the Golden Horde ruler Uzbek Khan. In general, the name consists of the words “o‘z” (self) + “bek” (lord), meaning “lord of oneself,” independent, master of one’s own destiny. It is also the name of the Uzbek nation living in Central Asia.

Geographical distribution

The name Uzbek is mainly found in the territory of the Republic of Turkeye. Although the indigenous people of Uzbekistan belong to the Uzbek nation, this name is almost never encountered in this region. As the author of this article and a resident of Uzbekistan, I have never personally met anyone named Uzbek.
