Literary Context (“One Thousand and One Nights”)

Shahrazad (Persian: شهرزاد) is the famous heroine of the classic work “One Thousand and One Nights.” According to the legend, the Persian king Shahryar ruled an island between India and China. After discovering his wife’s infidelity, he concluded that no woman was faithful. He executed his wife and then adopted a cruel practice: marrying a new woman every day and having her executed the next morning.

The vizier’s intelligent daughter, Shahrizada, devised a plan to end this cruelty and agreed to marry Shahryar. Starting from their wedding night, she told captivating stories but stopped at the most exciting point before dawn, promising to continue the next night. To hear the end, Shahryar spared her life each day. This continued for one thousand and one nights, during which the king and Shahrizada had three sons. Eventually, Shahryar trusted her loyalty, and his hatred toward women vanished.
